With this design being an owl, I wanted to have the look of feathers — so I added a yarn scarf with my plain yarn (just like I did for my crocheted fun hats). I also used a 4.5mm crochet hook for the body and 3.5mm hook for the eyes and wings.
Main Body:
Row 1. Start with a magic ring, chain 1 and 12 sc.
Row2. 2 sc into the first sc from the magic ring. Add 2 sc into each sc around.
Row3 1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, continue all the way around
Row4. 1 sc in the first two stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, continue all the way around
Row5. 1 sc in the first three stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, continue all the way around.
Row 6. 1 sc in the next four stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, continue all the way around.
Row 7. Sc in each stitch around. *Repeat row fourteen times more
Row 22. *5 sc, decrease a stitch, work decrease around to end of row. Make sc in the last 3 stitches.
Row 23. *8 sc, decrease a stitch, work pattern around row. Sc in last stitch.
- Cut the yarn leaving a 30 inch piece to be used to sew close the top.
Eyes:
Row 1. Start with a magic ring, chain 1 and 6 sc.
Row 2. 2 sc into the first sc from the magic ring. Add 2 sc into each sc around.
Row3 1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, continue all the way around
- Cut the yarn leaving a 20 inch piece to sew the eyes onto the body.
- You can add the eyes with the body open or with it closed, depends on personal preference.
- With the eyes attached, you can embrioder the centres with a french knot, or you can also add a small black button as the centre of the eyes.
Wings:
Row 1. Chain 10, (first 3 chains are the first dc) 4 dc into the 4th chain from hook. 2 dc into next chain, sc into each of the next four chains. 3 sc into the last chain spot to give the turn to the other side. Sc into the next four chain, 2 dc into the next chain, slip stitch into the top of the chain 3.
- Change colour for the outer ring.
Row 2. Chain 2, hdc in same stitch, 2 hdc in next two stitches. sc into next 6 stitches. 3 sc in the end stitch to make turn. sc in next 6 stitches. 2 hdc in next three stitches. Slip stitch into top of chain 2.
- Cut the yarn leaving a 20 inch piece to sew the wings onto the body.
- You can add the wings with the body open or with it closed, depends on personal preference.
- The wings on the pink owl are attached all the way around. It is a gift for a baby and she could suck on it and pull it off. The other little owl is for a toddler and the top curve of each wing was attached to the body so it can move like a real wing.
Assembly:
- Body made with extra yarn to use to sew close top.
- Attached white part of eyes and added centres.
- With a small bit of orange yarn embroider a nose between the eyes.
- Placed batting inside and closed the top.
- Placed the wings onto the side of the owls with the round part up.
- Cut a bit of yarn and attached to the top corners.
